Hospitals are Energy Vampires!!
After about 12 hospitalizations between my mom and dad in the past 4 years I've noticed some things that help me stay healthier and more energized.
TAKE NOTES
Doctors rarely have business cards on them and it’s hard to keep information straight so write down their name and specialty and what they said. After the 3rd specialist Hospital Brain Fog sets in. Having things in your cell folder or small notebook is a great way to track of previous hospitalizations, diagnoses, etc.
WATER
Chugging coffee keeps us going during long hospital stays, but water is key to real energy and hydration. Keep a bottle in the room and sip every 10 minutes or better yet WALK down to the cafeteria once an hour for a water break. Walk outside for a bit of sun on the way back.
HOSPERCIZE
Hospitals are energy vampires!! Make the hospital your gym by walking the stairs. I know it’s the last thing we caregivers want to do after sitting bedside in an uncomfortable chair for hours day after day, not sleeping well and eating bad cafeteria food, but tell yourself it’s only ten minutes out of countless hours. Caring for a hospitalized loved one can be the start of that work-out routine! Leave some workout clothes, sneakers and water bottle in the room closet and, yes---just do it.
MEDITATE
Instead of watching bad day time t.v. take 5 minutes and meditate. Believe me, you need to spend some quiet time checking in with yourself. Meditation is the workout for the brain, scientifically proven to reduce stress, and increase brain health. There are great apps on cell phones and online or just close your eyes and focus on your breathing.
EAT WELL
We all want that comfort food at these times, so make a deal with yourself. Eat the oatmeal for breakfast, the salad bar & soup for lunch and go for the cafeteria junk food for dinner—onion rings included! You earned it.
What's your hospital survival strategy??
